Tuesday May 31, 2022
With the U.S. Open a little over two weeks away, we are well into the "from many, one" process. The 2022 edition will be held at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, for the first time since 1988.* Andy Johnson and Garrett Morrison talk about the deep history of professional golf at the course, the maze that is the championship routing, and the USGA’s planned setup. Gil Hanse stops by (26:45) to share insights from more than a decade of working at The Country Club, then Andy and Garrett wrap up with some holes to keep an eye on and a few critiques of the course’s weaknesses.
* A number of times in this pod, we mistakenly refer to the 1988 U.S. Open as the 1989 U.S. Open. TFE regrets the error.

The USGA did narrow the 13th fairway due to the change of tees but no other fairway was narrowed, and have remained the same for member play since 2013, matter of fact some have been widened, e.g. short right of 4 and 8 green, and over clift on 10 (Himalayas) . Also William Flynn did work on other holes on the property besides the Primrose 9, e.g. the tee on Main 4 across the bridge (the hole that was removed and is the media center) above the Ouimet tee.

Hole 13, Primrose 1 to Primrose 2 green has been used since 1957, and was the hole that cost Arnold Palmer the ‘63 Open where he had 2 triples and a bogey in his last 3 rounds, though he did pick it for his greatest 18 holes. A new back tee was built across the road which would have stretched the hole to 490 yd., and was actually going to be used until the USGA realized it would create logistic problems so went back to the old tee. The hole is 450 yd not 427.
